Participating in writing competitions can be an inspiring, empowering and motivating experience, whether you’re a seasoned wordsmith looking for new challenges or a young writer looking to break into the spotlight.

Here, I’ve gathered some writing competitions coming to a close this July that cater to authors of all genres and experience levels. From short stories to novel manuscripts, you’ve still got time to get involved. So, dust off your keyboard, summon your creativity and get ready for the challenge.

1. HG Wells Short Story Competition

Entry Requirements: 1,5005,000 words depicting the theme of ‘motion’.
Entry fee: £10
Top prize: £1,000
Closes: 10 July

2. Petrichor Prize

Entry Requirements: A manuscript of 100 to 350 pages
Entry fee: $25
Top prize: $1000 and publication
Closes: 15 July

3. Seán O’Faoláin International Short Story Competition

Entry Requirements: Original, unpublished and unbroadcasted short stories of 3,000 words or less
Entry fee: €19 per story
Top prize: €2,000
Closes: 31 July

4. Norwich Writers’ Circle Olga Sinclair Prize

Entry Requirements: A 2000-word short story on the theme “the Sea.”
Entry fee: £9
Top prize: £500
Closes: 31 July
